Tustan is a unique monument, that’s why Mykhailo Rozhko had to develop by himself even the methodology of graphical reconstruction of the wooden cliff-side construction. The study of the fortress-city began in libraries and archives in 1971, and it continued with photographs, sketches and architectural measurements of traces of construction on the rocks in 1971-1978, and numerous expeditions and archeological excavations in 1978-1989.

In 1982, Mykhailo Rozhko initiated the creation of the Carpathian Architectural and Archeological Expedition at the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which enabled the study of the Carpathian defence line of the 10th – 13th centuries in much more detail.

The modern Tustan is also a center for research. The wooden cliff-side architecture, old construction techniques, petroglyphs, systems of water supply and defence, weapons of Tustan, and the archives of Mykhailo Rozhko are studied here. Archeological and ethnographic expeditions are ongoing, and historical reenactments and experiments are held, e.g. Carpathian signalling, trials of a medieval trebuchet. Modern technologies are also used: with the help of photogrammetry and laser scanning, a 3D model of the rock complexes with the construction was created, as well as the augmented reality app which allows everyone to see the old fortress like live.
