He was an endless source of anecdotes and true stories. “At the foot of Kamin, there was a large military tent and a few smaller ones. The large tent was the main ‘base’, which meant that people warmed up, ate, sang, communicated, listened to the boss, and got to know themselves there…” – Zirka Matchak, an expedition participant.

“The expedition was a unique phenomenon. In the times when not only Ukraine as a state but also the spirit of every person seemed to be squeezed by iron jaws, in the expedition the pressure somehow vanished: it was easy to breath, speak, sing, and… wings seemed to have grown. The expedition was an oasis in the middle of the then spiritual stuffiness” - Olia His, an expedition participant.

The expeditions of Mykhailo Rozhko provided a space for Ukrainian freedom in Soviet times: participants sang Ukrainian songs, discussed history, searched their own roots. From May till November, researchers lived and worked at the foot of the Urych rocks as one family. At the same time, Mykhailo Rozhko was known to be a severe “chief”: freedom of dialogue, tolerance, and free-thinking in his team were grounded on discipline and obeying of rules and traditions of life in the expedition.
The present-day Tustan Site Museum continues the work which was started in those first voluntary expeditions. Founded on the ideals of Ukrainian chivalry, Tustan projects them into the future through its innovative projects and events – festivals, museums, guided tours, mobile apps, etc.
